Did You Know There Are 6 Islands Right Here in Rockford?
There's a common saying that you learn something new every day. Well, I can confidently say that I did in fact have that happen! I was today years old when I found out that Rockford, Illinois is home to 6 islands!
I'm sure there are certain rules and legalities behind classifying a piece of land as an island. However, and maybe it's just me, 6 seems like a pretty big number for a town in Northern Illinois. Sure, we have the Rock River to thank for this... but 6?! That's crazy to me. If you don't believe me, take a look at this insane map I found of it!

The 6 Islands of Rockford, Illinois
I was sleuthing around when I came across this map on AnyplaceAmerica. It listed all of Illinois' counties and the islands located in them. All broken down by city, of course. Here's the map I found of Rockford.
Oh, and the fun doesn't even stop there! These islands also have names too. Now, keep in mind, these are within Winnebago county, but still fairly close to us.
- Montague Island - 1.03 miles from Rockford
- Blackhawk Island - about 4.38 miles from Rockford
- Boney Island - 2.8 miles from Rockton
- Denton Island - 1.25 miles from Rockford
- Sumner Island - 1.7 miles from Pecatonica
- Island Number 1 - 3.59 miles from Rockford
I'd love more than anything to be the one to rename Island Number 1 hahaha! Some of these islands even have property for sale on them.
