The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has unveiled the 2024 Outstanding Volunteers of the Year, honoring the most dedicated residents in our community.

Eleven extraordinary individuals and organizations are being recognized for their unwavering dedication to the Land of Lincoln's natural and historical treasures.

Unsung Heroes of History and Nature

According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, these volunteers have made significant contributions across Illinois, from historic sites to nature preserves:

  • Gary Cope of Collinsville has been a pivotal figure at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, dedicating over 110 tours and nearly 600 hours to sharing the site's rich history.
  • Kerry Novak, who retired as site superintendent at Starved Rock State Park, continues his commitment every Wednesday, contributing 125 hours in 2024 to assist over 350,000 visitors annually.

Community Champions of Conservation

  • Bill Lantz uses his vacation time to support the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site’s Harvest Frolic Fall Celebration. His versatility in tasks—from landscape work to managing event logistics—showcases his deep commitment.
  • Robert and Marcia Shelby of West Salem dedicate countless hours to ecological conservation at Beall Woods State Park, focusing on bird counts and educating future naturalists.

Guardians of the Wild and the Arts

  • Tamina Itani from Chicago has coordinated a team of 190 volunteers to protect piping plovers, while also developing educational materials and conservation partnerships.
  • Nancy Cottom, along with her canine companions, greets visitors and handles various park duties with enthusiasm and warmth.
  • The Friends of Langham Island and Menard County Trails and Greenways both contribute significantly to managing invasive species, showcasing their dedication rain or shine.

Preserving Beauty and Safety

  • Larry Coultas of Pana has made an indelible impact as a hunter safety instructor for over 40 years, educating nearly 3,300 students.
  • The Springfield Civic Garden Club’s floral designs at the Dana-Thomas House have transformed the site, reflecting their dedication through over 700 hours of volunteer work
  • Roseann Webb of Peru, a nurse and mother of four, has devoted over 2,400 hours to welcoming visitors and leading hikes at Starved Rock State Park.
