When is the last time you had a good night's sleep? You know, when you fall asleep easily, stay asleep, and wake up feeling refreshed? For me, it's been way too long to remember, and I know I'm not alone when I say that.

Fed Up With Sleeping Problems

Up until a year ago, I never had issues falling asleep at night. Now I struggle to fall asleep almost daily and I am beyond tired of it! (Literally and figuratively).

I have tried Melatonin, but I always wake up feeling groggy no matter which dose I take.

I have tried wearing a sleep mask and listening to white noise, but the mask makes me  hot and the noise is more annoying than relaxing to me.

I have cut out short cat naps, purchased better pillows and sheets, and have turned on the ceiling fan...NOTHING WORKS.

On average I get about 5-6 hours of sleep a night, and that is not enough for me, so what else can I try?

We decided to ask Facebook for help...

After reading through all the comments, I quickly determined these are the top 5 things Illinoisans must have for a good night's sleep...

I must admit that when I saw several people say they need to have their pet next to them to sleep well, perhaps that is part of my problem?

For over 17 years I always had a little dog sleeping next to me in bed, but now both of them have passed and our 2 big dogs don't sleep in bed with us. Do I need to allow them in our bed to finally get a full night of restful sleep? Hopefully I can get my husband to play along with this idea.

Proven Tricks to Help You Sleep Better

We all know we should eliminate using electronics in our bed or too close to bedtime and that long daytime naps can really mess up our sleep cycles, but what other simple things can we do?

Here's some other tricks to try to get a good night's sleep according to Healthline;

  • Establish a strict bedtime routine, meaning going to bed and waking up around the same time each day.
  • Increase bright light exposure during the day.
  • Stop drinking caffeinated beverages 8 hours before you go to bed.
  • Try other supplements like magnesium, nitrate, omega-3, resveratrol, and zinc.
  • Don't drink any liquids 1-2 hours before you go to bed.
