Warning: Fake School Fundraiser Scam Targeting Rockford Neighborhoods

A fake school fundraiser scam is spreading through Rockford neighborhoods, with two teens reportedly knocking on doors and asking for cash donations.

Are you a person who answers the call every time your doorbell rings? I most definitely am not.

To be fair, our Ring doorbell is not hardwired so it is dead half the time, but still, I don't like answering the door for people I don't know. The only thing that will make me reconsider my strict no-answering-the-door-to-strangers policy is when a kid is standing there, and even that can get us in trouble.

Scam Warning for Rockford Neighborhoods

The other day I spotted a warning on the Nextdoor app that I think Rockford residents need to be aware of.

A concerned citizen wrote;

SCAM ALERT: 2 male teens are trying to get money for a Rkfd Christian School outing - school confirmed this is not true & there is no fundraiser.

The warning also included a picture of one of the suspects:

If attempting to raise money for a fake school fundraiser isn't enough, the organization the teens claim the "fundraiser" is benefitting changes too. Other neighbors have said the teens claimed the money was for Rockford Memorial, and another big red flag is that the teens are carrying "homemade money sheets".

Rockford Police have been made aware of this situation, and are urging anyone who has already given these teens money to call the non-emergency line at 815-966-2900 to report it.
