An investigation is underway after a pedestrian was struck and killed late on Friday night in Rockford.

Fatal Crash on North 2nd Street

According to the report, at approximately 11:05 pm on Friday (4/18), emergency responders were called to the intersection of North 2nd Street and Auburn Street, where a motor vehicle struck a pedestrian.

A bystander was reportedly performing CPR when Rockford Police and Rockford Fire crews arrived on the scene.

The pedestrian was transported to a Rockford area hospital for emergency treatment, but according to the press release, the individual was pronounced dead at 11:37 pm.

48-year-old Man Identified as Victim

The Winnebago County Coroner's Office has released the name of an individual killed Friday night on N. 2nd Street at Auburn Street. He is a 48-year-old Alan Varela, who is a transient, according to the press release.

The driver involved in the pedestrian crash remained at the scene and has been cooperating with investigators.

The Coroner confirmed that Mr. Varela died from "blunt trauma to the head, chest, and abdomen," which are consistent with injuries sustained in a vehicle versus pedestrian crash.

Ongoing Investigation by Local Authorities

The Rockford Police Department and Winnebago County Coroner's Office are continuing a joint investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
