
FDA Warns Illinois Families: Major Recall Issued Over Rodent Contamination
If you feed Purina pet food to any of your pets, there's something very important you need to be aware of. The FDA recently announced a major recall of Purina products and other popular brands that many Illinois families likely have in their homes right now.

I have two dogs and a cat at home that all eat Purina pet foods, so when I saw this news pop up, I was highly concerned.
Let's get to the most important news first.
According to the FDA recall published on December 26, 2025, all FDA-regulated products stored and distributed by Gold Star Distribution in Minneapolis, Minnesota are being recalled due to "the presence of rodent and avian contamination."
Umm...what?!
Gold Star Distribution primarily services stores in Minnesota, but products sold in some Illinois stores may be affected, too. Just wait, it get worse. The possible contamination isn't limited to pet food, it includes many popular foods and medications Illinois families use too.
The official voluntary Gold Star product recall list is 44 pages long and includes popular brands like:
- Coca-Cola
- Pepsi
- Minute Maid
- Jif
- Hershey's
- Reese's
- Heinz
- Kraft
- Advil
- Aleve
- Tylenol
- Claritin
- Purina
- Fancy Feast
- 9 Lives
- Friskies
What Illinois Families Need to Know About the Recall
When you see a list of thousands of recalled items from popular brands your family uses daily, it may feel like all of your stuff is contaminated by rat poop, but please remember this. The recall does not cover items shipped directly by manufacturers or other distributors to Illinois stores, just the ones from the Gold Star facility in Minneapolis.
