According to a post in the What's Happening in Rockford IL? Facebook group, a picture from a McDonald's drive-thru window, explains exactly what's going on:
Due to a discontinuation of penny production, we'll round cash change to the nearest 5 cents when pennies are unavailable.
Here's what you need to know:
- Menu prices remain unchanged.
- Only your change will be rounded.
- No impact on credit/debit cards
- No impact if change ends in 0 or 5
Why the Rounding Explanation Has People Confused
There was also an explanation of how rounding works, which legit blew my mind. Anyway, here's the larger point: there are roughly 114 billion to 250 billion pennies in circulation now, and pennies will be used in America for many, many years to come.

Is Penny Shortage Panic Premature?
Just because the Mint isn't making new pennies doesn't automatically mean a shortage is lurking now or next week. So I'm not totally sure why McDonald's is already flipping the switch on rounding up or down. It feels a little early, but hey, it's definitely got people talking.
