According to the City of Rockford, daily lane closures remain in place between Harrison and 22nd Avenue as crews handle grading work, sidewalk installation, and new street lighting.
Replacement of Water Service May Cause Detours
Water service replacements between Broadway Street and 18th Avenue have now been completed, marking a key milestone. However, the stretch from 21st Avenue to 18th Avenue remains fully closed, forcing detour routes for motorists.
On the north end, traffic between 18th Avenue and Broadway Street has reopened to local vehicles, but utility crews from ComEd are still relocating infrastructure, using flaggers to manage congestion.
Pedestrian safety remains a concern, as crosswalk signals near Collins Aerospace have been temporarily removed while new systems are installed.
Auburn Street Delays Expected Through Late May
Across town, the Auburn Street project between Central Avenue and Main Street is entering a disruptive phase. Lane closures in the eastbound outside lane are in effect as crews install a new water main.
Officials warn that delays could continue through May 29, so drivers who use the Auburn corridor should seek alternate routes to avoid bottlenecks during peak drive time hours.
Mason Avenue Reconstruction Could Last Until Late June
A third major project is about to begin on Mason Avenue, where a full roadway reconstruction is planned from the IL-251 frontage road to the east dead end.
Crews will begin preparing equipment in the area the week of May 4, with the pavement removal and major construction projects ramping up the following week, according to the City of Rockford.
This project includes new drainage systems, storm sewers, and driveway improvements, with a targeted completion date of June 30, 2025.
