Illinois Expands HIV Prep Access: Now Available from Pharmacists

In a bold move to increase access to HIV prevention, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) issued an order that allows residents to get the medication without a prescription.

A Major Step Toward Zero HIV Transmissions

According to an IDPH press release, PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) will now be available directly from pharmacists, and when taken daily, PrEP reduces the risk of HIV transmission through sex by up to 99 percent.

This change in access for HIV prevention medication was signed into effect by IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra and is reportedly a part of the state's bigger efforts under Governor Pritzker's Getting to Zero Illinois initiative, which has a goal of eliminating new HIV infections in Illinois by 2030.

Targeting Communities Most in Need

Although Illinois has made progress in lowering new HIV diagnoses, with 1,386 cases reported in 2024, which was down 9 percent from 2023.

Black and Hispanic communities continue to be disproportionately impacted, representing over 60 percent of new cases.

The PrEP4IL program, which offers financial assistance, received more than 900 new applications last year, many coming from the same communities.

Training and Confidential Care Requirements

Pharmacists who wish to provide PrEP must complete a specialized training program to make sure services are being delivered confidentially and in accordance with Illinois law.

They will also be required to track and report the use of PrEP through a dedicated IDPH reporting system.
