
Illinois Governor Orders Flags Stay at Half Staff Through Tuesday
After President Trump had already ordered that flags be lowered across the U.S. this week to honor the death of Pope Francis, they will remain at half staff in Illinois until at least April 29.
Honoring a Life of Service and Sacrifice
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has issued an order under the Illinois Flag Display Act to fly all flags at half-staff from sunrise on Saturday, April 26, through sunset on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, to honor a fallen Chicago Fire Captain.

Captain David Meyer joined the Chicago Fire Department in 1996 and was most recently assigned to Truck 29, according to WTTW-TV.
According to ABC 7, Captain Meyer died after sustaining injuries while battling a garage fire in Chicago's Austin neighborhood on Tuesday (4/22).
A Life of Devotion and Service
According to a story from Fox 32, David Meyer was a devoted husband and father. Captain Meyer is survived by his wife, whom he had known since they were 15 years old. He also leaves behind three daughters, a son, and his parents.
As Illinois and the region mourn the loss of a beloved firefighter, the flags flying at half-staff serve as a visual reminder of the risks first responders face daily.
Man Charged in Connection with Fatal Fire
An arson suspect has been charged with murder in the death of Captain David Meyer, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Charles Green, 44, resides in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago, where the garage fire took the life of Captain Meyer. He has been charged with Murder and Aggravated Arson.
