Valentine’s Day has a way of bringing out grand gestures, carefully timed surprises, and decisions that are… let’s call them very on brand for the holiday. Every year, the same romantic moment seems to pop up everywhere at once… restaurants, living rooms, public places that suddenly feel a little too quiet.

And no, this isn’t based on vibes alone.

New data suggests that one classic Valentine’s move is more common than ever this year. The kind that involves planning, secrecy, and a suspicious amount of late-night internet searching in the weeks leading up to February 14.

Where this is happening the most, and just how obvious it’s becoming, might not surprise you.

What This Valentine’s Study Was Really Tracking

A recent analysis from Walters Wedding Estates examined engagement-related Google search behavior to identify where Valentine’s Day proposals are most likely to happen. The idea is simple: people don’t usually search for engagement rings or proposal ideas casually so those searches often signal something imminent.

How the Valentine’s Proposal Index Works

Each U.S. state was assigned a Valentine’s Proposal Likelihood Index.
An index score of 100 represents the national average. Scores above 100 indicate higher-than-average engagement-related search activity.

Purchase intent (ring shopping) was weighted more heavily than proposal planning, since buying a ring is typically the strongest indicator that a proposal is close.

Illinois didn’t just land above average; it ranked among the top states nationwide. With an index score of 188, Illinois showed engagement-related search activity 88% higher than the national average, placing it firmly in the high-likelihood category for Valentine’s proposals this year.

Why Timing Matters So Much

Most people buy engagement rings weeks, not years, before proposing. That’s why the study focused on searches from November through mid-January, a window that strongly predicts February engagements, including Valentine’s Day.

A Fun Illinois Valentine’s Detail

Illinois’ most searched engagement ring style? Emerald-cut, with gold as the dominant metal. Classic, intentional, and very Valentine’s-appropriate.
