Suburban HS Cancels Classes After Resource Officer Loses Firearm
Serious questions about school safety protocols and the handling of firearms on school grounds are being asked right now in Arlington Heights.
A school resource officer assigned to Forest View Education Center in Arlington Heights reportedly realized he had misplaced his service weapon after temporarily removing it while using a restroom just before student dismissal.
According to local authorities, the officer’s firearm was left unattended in the restroom, and despite an immediate and extensive search, the weapon has not been recovered. Surveillance footage showed only a limited number of individuals entering the area during the critical time window, but investigators have not yet determined whether the gun was taken or simply remains undiscovered somewhere on the property.
What Makes This Especially Alarming Is The Weapon Is Still Unaccounted For
This is not a case of a recovered weapon after a brief scare. It remains missing, which means the risk, at least in theory, is still unresolved.
Out of what officials are calling an “abundance of caution,” classes at the school were canceled for Tuesday while law enforcement continues their search and investigation.
Police K9 units and multiple agencies assisted in sweeping the building and surrounding grounds, yet the firearm has still not been located. Additional officers have been assigned to the campus to maintain security while the investigation continues.
For parents, students, and staff, the situation is understandably unsettling. Schools are expected to be among the safest environments in a community, and the idea of a missing firearm inside one, even temporarily, naturally raises concern and anxiety.
Officials have emphasized that there is currently no indication of an active threat, but the investigation remains ongoing and unresolved.
