When in the “Land of Lincoln” you could be forgiven for thinking that the most historic building in the state would be attached to “Honest Abe”, but you’d be wrong. It’s attached to a US President, just not Lincoln, --or Reagan (if you were thinking Ron).

Instead, the most historical building in Illinois (per Love Exploring) is Ulysses S. Grant’s home in Galena. The house was presented to Grant upon his return from the Civil War. It was built in 1860, and it’s been restored to it’s 1868 style and sensibility.

There are plenty of historically significant buildings in Illinois. The Old State Capital in Springfield, Union Station in Chicago, any one of the Frank Lloyd Wright houses in state, Wrigley Field (of course), The Baha’i temple in Wilmette, The Willis tower, the President Reagan boyhood home in Dixon, The Abe Lincoln House in Springfield is significant too.

Galena has a lot of things to see and off the scale charm. If you’ve never trekked to the extreme northwestern parts of Illinois, it is special treat you’ll certainly carry with you. While you’re there don’t miss Grant’s home.
