Clothing Brands Once Popular Among Millennials Shuttering All Stores; Laying off 1,400 Employees

The company behind once-popular brands often sold in shopping malls across the U.S. has filed for bankruptcy and is ready to close all of its stores

You might not know the name Liberated Brands, but you're probably familiar with at least one of the clothing brands under the company's umbrella.

Bankruptcy And Store Closings In 2025

Whether it is the after effects of a rough 2024 or a sluggish start in the new year, multiple chains and brands are already struggling in 2025.

Needless to say the first quarter of 2025 hasn't been easy when it comes to retail, and it's likely not getting better anytime soon.

The latest to fall victim to financial struggles is Liberated Brands.

Which Stores Are Closing Due To Recent Filing

According to a recent report from Fortune.com, Liberated Brands has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Many of the brands under the Liberated name were once prominently featured at one-time shopping mall stalwart PacSun along with several of their own branded standalone stores.

Quicksilver, Volcom and Billabong are all part of California-based company, and will now be closing their retail locations for good.

"Liberated listed debt of $226 million and laid off approximately 1,400 employees as part of its shutdown," Fortune said.

More than 120 Quicksilver, Volcom and Billabong stores are set to close.

A separate report from TheStreet.com noted the license rights for some of the brands were "terminated as a result of a default under license agreements" in December 2024. This allegedly led to vendors "holding back in-transit inventory."
