Halloween is one of the most fun holidays of the year here in Illinois. We have so many festivals and events, it's easy to be entertained. However, one of the biggest things we must remember is keeping kids safe while they're out trick-or-treating.

As fun as trick-or-treating is, it is scary to think about children going up to random people. It's the opposite of us teaching them "stranger danger," but maybe that's just me.

Luckily, the Illinois Poison Center website released some helpful tips and reminders as Halloween gets closer.

Stick To Well-Lit Areas

This one's a given. It's always smarter to stick to areas that have clear visibility. It makes it easier to see when something bad is happening and gives you more ability to keep an eye on where your child is.

Take The Smaller Children Out Before Dark

Again, one way to keep kids safe, keep them indoors during more hectic and potentially dangerous times.

Anything Reflective Can Be A Lifesaver

Making sure to wear reflective clothing can save many trick-or-treaters from traffic-related accidents AND make it easier to spot a kid/parent. Another smart piece of advice was to put reflective tape on children's treat bags!

The biggest thing though, be sure to bring a flashlight!

Remind Kids To Look Before Crossing the Street

Based on personal experience, I know the excitement about Halloween. Especially as a kid, I would get so hyper and excited and just run from house to house.

Well, remind your kids to not be like me, especially when crossing the street. People will still be driving on the roads, and the candy will still be there if you take a couple of seconds to look both ways.
